Antique Japanese Satsuma Millefleur Bowl, Late Meiji Period
An exceptional antique Japanese Satsuma earthenware bowl of impressive scale and richly decorated in the celebrated millefleur style, the entire surface densely covered with an extraordinary profusion of chrysanthemums, blossoms, and seasonal flowers rendered in brilliant enamels of crimson, lavender, orange, blue, pink, and white with delicate gilt highlights throughout.
The intricacy and saturation of the decoration are particularly striking, with virtually no unused surface, demonstrating the remarkable level of craftsmanship associated with fine export Satsuma wares produced during the late Meiji period. The bowl’s rounded form is lavishly ornamented both inside and out, creating a dazzling visual effect from every angle.
The underside bears a gilt character reserve mark to the base.
Executed on a finely crackled ivory earthenware body, this impressive piece embodies the ornate decorative aesthetic that made Japanese Satsuma ceramics highly sought after by Western collectors at the turn of the 20th century.
