Goodridge Roberts (1904–1974)
Goodridge Roberts was a pioneering Canadian modernist painter, renowned for his lyrical landscapes, still lifes, and figure studies. Born in Barbados and raised in Fredericton, New Brunswick, he studied at the École des Beaux-Arts in Montreal and later at the Art Students League in New York. Roberts became one of the first artists-in-residence at Queen’s University and was a member of both the Royal Canadian Academy of Arts and the Canadian Group of Painters. His work is celebrated for its expressive brushwork and poetic treatment of nature, often conveying a deep emotional connection to the Canadian landscape. Today, Roberts’ paintings are held in major collections across Canada, including the National Gallery of Canada and the Art Gallery of Ontario.
