A richly textured and vibrant autumn landscape by Canadian painter Ralph Wallace Burton (1905–1983), Autumn 1968 depicts a quiet rural scene just west of North Gower, Ontario. Featuring a weathered barn nestled among vivid fall foliage, this oil on board beautifully captures the bold colours and rustic charm of Eastern Ontario in autumn.
The work is signed by the artist on both the front and back, and is presented in a complementary gold-coloured frame. A fine example of Burton’s distinctive plein-air style and deep connection to the Canadian landscape.
About the Artist: Ralph Wallace Burton (1905–1983)
Ralph Wallace Burton was a Canadian painter best known for his expressive landscapes and close association with A.Y. Jackson of the Group of Seven. Born in Newington, Ontario, Burton studied at the Ottawa School of Art and later under Jackson at the Banff School of Fine Arts. His style reflects the Group of Seven's influence, with a focus on bold brushwork, rich colour, and a deep reverence for the Canadian wilderness.
Burton often painted en plein air, traveling extensively throughout Ontario and Quebec to capture the seasonal rhythms and architectural heritage of rural Canada. His work was especially devoted to the Ottawa Valley, where he documented not only natural scenes but also vanishing barns, mills, and small towns.
In addition to his artistic career, Burton was an educator and an official war artist during WWII. His paintings are held in numerous public and private collections across Canada, valued for their authenticity, warmth, and connection to Canada’s visual heritage.
