Peter Ewart was a prominent Canadian painter best known for his evocative depictions of life in the Canadian West. Born in Kisbey, Saskatchewan, and raised in Ontario, Ewart studied at the Vancouver School of Art and later worked as a commercial illustrator before devoting himself fully to fine art.
After moving to British Columbia, he developed a deep connection to the landscapes and people of the western provinces—especially the working cowboys, ranchers, and Indigenous communities of the interior. His style combined classical realism with strong composition, narrative elements, and a keen eye for atmospheric detail. Ewart’s paintings often reflect themes of solitude, endurance, and the quiet nobility of everyday life in rural Canada.
